It's not the "real deal" but it's a big, loud, entertaining, choreographed spectacle, and if that's what people want to pay for then fair play to them.

Meanwhile, I'll probably be in the back room of a pub watching an actual gig.DaveShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14030589043526494438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8285162121291357473.post-55611632664024617322016-01-20T00:02:56.733+00:002016-01-20T00:02:56.733+00:00I agree, ML, that doctoring music is not a modern ...I agree, ML, that doctoring music is not a modern phenomenon, but the degree of fraud that happens now was impossible until the last couple of decades. Miming is nothing new, but was used mainly for guest appearances to sing one song on TV variety and talk shows, as well as TOTP. It was not previously used for supposedly live gigs. Britney's actual singing in that video is really quite shocking, and all of the 50s/early 60s pretty boy rock & rollers were, despite their limitations, significantly better than that.

Martin: you're right. Such techniques are used by pop performers on the extreme where style is all important and ability unnecessary. However, there are some singers with integrity who put disclaimers on their albums that they don't use autotune.

Yes, CM: Milli Vanilli took deception to a new level, although I suspect there are others who have done the same, except they haven't been found out.Neville Grundyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10923209266005338452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8285162121291357473.post-77182527034892415172016-01-19T23:26:57.376+00:002016-01-19T23:26:57.376+00:00Milli Vanilli were of course a completely differen...Milli Vanilli were of course a completely different order of transgression as they didn't sing on their own records in the first place, autotune or not.

The same was true of the guy who supposedly sang "Tarzan Boy", which I think came from the same German studio.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8285162121291357473.post-22902720881698884842016-01-19T16:00:37.180+00:002016-01-19T16:00:37.180+00:00Nev - You're spot on about the pop end of the ...Nev - You're spot on about the pop end of the music spectrum, though I doubt Adele uses autotune. However, that's a mere fraction of live music as I and obviously you know and love it.

I'm not saying all the artists I watch live most weeks have great voices, but Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Maria McKee and Natalie Prass for 3 have voices that would stand out in any era.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8285162121291357473.post-13071548002100530322016-01-19T15:56:23.419+00:002016-01-19T15:56:23.419+00:00We live in an image based world. As long as someone "looks" right, their actual personal qualities or talent are pretty much irrelevant.

It's been going on for many, many years. Even as far back as the 50s there were a host of pretty girls and boys of limited singing ability foisted onto the record buying public. The difference was, with no way of 'forcing' them to sing better, producers had to cover up their vocal deficiencies by either turning the backing track up and/or double tracking them with a session singer, or getting them to sing the song twenty times and splice together the best bits.

Music, at least since recording technology was invented, has been mostly assembly-line.Lizard Seerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07497330695288945161noreply@blogger.com
