I've just heard the sad news that Gerry Rafferty died today of liver failure; he'd been in hospital since November. I make no apology for going for the obvious song as it's simply wonderful. I remember the first time I heard it: it was 1978 and I was driving to St Dominics Comp in Huyton when it came on the radio. I loved it immediately.

Very sad news indeed. A highly talented guy, who never really achieved the success he deserved.
ReplyDeleteIt was an inevitable end for a gentle and sensitive talent who was out of place in the enormo-time that he'd been thrust into, without a few crutches. Some of the more dramatic stories about Gerry are sadly, little exaggerated. "When he took to drinking we knew that he was thinking that his days were quickly coming to an end" says some of the lyric to 'Steamboat Row' - a short song about his Dad that he recorded twice.
ReplyDeleteAt least he's resting easily now.
RIP Gerry you will be missed
