Religion versus Beer

When Christian students at a Texas university began wearing T-shirts with the slogan "10 reasons Jesus is better than beer", the agnostic and atheist student group produced this response:

Ten Reasons Why Beer Is Better Than Religion
  1. No one will kill you for not drinking beer.
  2. Beer doesn’t tell you how to have sex.
  3. Beer has never caused a major war.
  4. No one forces beer on minors who can’t think for themselves.
  5. When you have a beer, you don’t knock on people’s doors trying to give it away.
  6. No one has ever been burnt at the stake, hanged or tortured over their brand of beer.
  7. You don’t have to wait more than 2000 years for a second beer.
  8. There are laws preventing beer labels lying to you.
  9. You can prove you have a beer.
  10. If you’ve devoted your life to beer, there are groups to help you stop.

  1. If we look a little closer, the main aim of the attack is Christianity. The comments are fair enough, but I bet the atheist students wouldn't make any specific references to Islam. Some years ago, a heavy metal musician appeared, wearing a t-shirt which bore the legend: "Jesus was a c---". When he was challenged to replace the name of Jesus with that of Muhammad, he didn't seem to like the idea. Funny that...

  2. Not the old "You wouldn't say that about Islam!" argument. Private Eye got so fed up with readers' letters to that effect that a few months ago they reprinted a pageful of cartoons about Muhammad and Islam that they had previously published over the years. Then there were of course the Danish cartoons and, more recently, those in Charlie Hebdo.

I can't speak for these specific students, but the suggestion that Christianity is constantly mocked while Islam is treated with kid gloves simply isn't borne out by the facts.

The comment on that T-shirt isn't funny or satirical; it's just designed to upset people, which is a stupid thing to do, whichever religion it's aimed at.

  3. Nice one from the atheist students (and in case anyone's wondering I recently mocked islam on my blog.)

  4. Well, I'm glad that Private Eye and Ed have been courageous enough to mock Islam, but it was no less a person that Rory Bremner who said that mocking Islam could get you shot; the Charlie Hebdo massacre and the attempts to kill the Danish cartoonist bear this out. Let's not forget, either, the Dutch film producer and the Japanese translator of "The Satanic Verses", who were both killed by Muslim extremists..
