Ship in Haskayne reopens

Roving reporter Bernie tells me he has recently been to the reopened Ship Inn at Haskayne. For those who don't know it, the Ship is an old canal-side pub, just off the A5147 between Scarisbrick and Maghull and about 8 miles from the centre of Southport, noted in the past for food as well as real ale. The new landlord is keen to reinstate the Folk singaround that took place on Thursdays for many years, and he also has had experience with open mic nights. The beers on offer when Bernie visited were Southport Sandgrounder and Golden Sands, along with the Warwickshire brewery's Ffiagra, and Theakston's mild.

He's certainly made a good start with an interesting selection of real beers, rather than going for the usual 'guests' that unimaginative pubs tend to plump for. I'll keep you informed of any further developments. (postcode: L39 7JP)

  1. Phew, well that's some good news. Despite having become something of a gastro pub in its last incarnation - food prices competing with those in Hampstead, and the beer tariff not lagging too far behind, I always loved that place. If you could ignore the kids' playground/barbecue aspect of the outside area, the canalside grass (no comments!) on a Summer's day with a pint of Landlord could be idyllic.
Anyone remember the formal Folk Club, run by the Black Diamonds group, that operated on Tuesday nights throughout the '70s? Held in the long room, (to the left of the bar as one entered,) it booked some big names in its time, had full houses, was well-run and rivalled the dear old Bothy in popularity. Ah sweet bird of youth............

  2. Gonna give The Ship a whirl this week thinks I. Hoping to attend the Bothy singarounds during the summer too.
